The year 1928 marked a high point in the career of Antoine Courtens, who was working simultaneously on two major projects: the Palais de la Folle Chanson, not far from La Cambre Abbey, and the Haerens Hotel.
In order to make the most of the plot, he designed a corner building featuring a rotunda tower that acts as a link between the lower part, an apartment building overlooking Avenue de la Ramée, and the upper part, a city residence suited to social life.
The resolutely geometric shapes, the whiteness of the façades and the stylishly discreet décor place the building firmly in the Art Deco style. Courtens' approach was undoubtedly inspired by Victor Horta, for whom he worked as an intern. He also borrowed certain elements from Frank Lloyd Wright, such as the frieze concealing the flat roof. He paid particular attention to the interior decoration, especially the large entrance hall with its high-quality marble.
